How Medicaid works

Medicaid Basics

What Is Medicaid?

Medicaid is a state and federally funded health coverage program for people with limited income and assets. In Connecticut, it’s known as HUSKY Health, and it provides full medical coverage for eligible individuals — including nursing home care, home care services, and waiver programs that help people stay safely in their homes.

At Compass Medicaid Consultants LLC, we focus on helping older adults and individuals with disabilities qualify for Medicaid when they need long-term care — either in a nursing home or at home through the CT Home Care Program for Elders (CHCPE).

Medicaid Eligibility Basics

To qualify, applicants must meet three main requirements:

Financial Eligibility

Income and asset limits apply. For example, single individuals typically must have less than $1,600 in countable assets, though this varies based on marital status and program type.

Medical Eligibility

The applicant must require assistance with daily living (e.g., bathing, dressing, mobility) or skilled nursing care.

Residency and Citizenship

Must be a Connecticut resident and either a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen.
